Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB)
One of the most recent eye-catching news items is the inaugural ceremony for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, which has aroused tremendous public attention and attracted a constant flood of visitors since it was first opened to traffic on 24 October 2018.
Statistics on HZMB
The Guardian claims that at 50 km long, HZMB is one of the seven modern wonders of the world. HZMB comprises three bridges, one undersea tunnel, and four artificial islands; the entire construction took almost ten years to complete because of unexpected architectural challenges and technical difficulties.
As a bridge that crosses three different regions which follow distinct traffic regulations, driving directions and toll charges require the clearest specification. Because most of the construction is located in mainland waters, namely the Pearl River Estuary, vehicles should remain on the right side until they pass the customs of Hong Kong and Macao. All toll fees will be charged in Yuan, but multiple payment methods are accepted, including cash, bankcards, Alipay, and WeChat Pay.
What Do We Want to Know?
As students of the University of Macau, we normally take the ferry to Hong Kong; however, today HZMB offers a brand new route, with the promise of a shorter travel time, lower cost, and the chance to see beautiful scenery when on the bridge. Here is some information for students or Macao residents who wish to travel to Hong Kong on HZMB:
1. We can take a taxi or bus 101X and 102X to reach the Macao side of immigration control;
2. After we go through immigration clearance, we are required to take a shuttle bus to travel between Macao and Hong Kong until it arrives at the Hong Kong side of immigration control;
3. The Hong Kong immigration checkpoint is located near the Hong Kong International Airport, so we need to use another form of transport to go to the city centre.
In case you are wondering, the Macao-Hong Kong shuttle bus charges RMB 58 (HKD/MOP 65) from 6:00am to 11:59pm, and RMB 63 (HKD/MOP 70) from 00:00am to 5:59am.
